When you look back in time, voluptuous women were considered to be most desirable. Larger women were seen as mother figures, and children were a necessity in hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies.  Even in cave man days, small statues usually idealized their goddesses as voluptuous women and in most cases these statuettes were more obese than voluptuous.

The lyrics in "Fiddler On The Roof" (If I Was a Rich Man) which talks about Russian peasant society at the turn of the twentieth century exemplifies a rich man's wife as having a proper double chin. In other words, for much of the past, being meatier was a status symbol, because it proved you had an abundance of food, and therefore must be wealthy.

In the last half of the twentieth century, there has been a new incoming citizens from many various societies into north America. With these cultural groups have also come the more traditional preference for larger families and women who will bear larger families.  The well endowed woman is back in fashion.

Who knows, maybe in a few more years, Hollywood hotties will be BBW's.  Mae West was certainly not in any way skinny, but in the early twentieth century she was most men's wet dream.
